The End of March

What a crazy month it has been. Things are changing. Life is taking on a new shape. I feel accomplished. I had set out goals for March and met them all.

This last week I finished my last goal, which was to learn about female artists I had never heard of. I was introduced to Camille Claudel, Judy Chicago and her “Dinner Party” , Laura Aguilar and several others that caught my eye.  Just because the month is over doesn’t mean I’m going to stop learning. I enjoyed my self assigned assignment, I plan to continue.

Something I learned is most female artists are not well known. Unless you are schooled in art or have a true driving passion for art , the names of great female artists are not “household” names like Picasso or Monet or Dali.  There are a couple like O’Keefe or Kahlo, but the men far out number the women.

Saturday is Race for the Cure. I think it is the perfect way to close out NWHM. I’ll post pictures in my photo blog after the walk.

Cheers!

NWHM Goals in Check

With NWHM coming to a close I had to take a few minutes to check the goals I had set out for myself.

1: Goal one was to buy some children’s books from my favorite childhood authors and donate them to my sons school library.  I went at lunch today to the book store and picked up :

Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh– Man I loved this book growing up! Harriet M Welsch and her tomato sandwiches, just thumbing through the pages took me back to a time and place far far away I had forgotten about.  I probably read it at least a dozen times when I was young.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell – the book wasn’t written by a woman but is about a young girl left to survive on her own on an island. After all these years I have never forgot the struggle and triumph she went through. The book is awesome. I still have my original version from when I was a kid.

2: Goal two was to read at least one biography about a woman involved with Suffrage and goal three was to learn about not as famous women in history.  I put these together. I didn’t actually read a whole biography as in book, but I researched Margaret Sanger. I learn that people either loved her or hated her. Wikkipedia (yes more Wikkipedia) seemed to have the most objective article on her. I’m grateful that I have a choice and rights when it comes to reproduction. All I’m going to say is with the right group of us her life story, theories and struggles could make a very interesting debate!

3. Goal three was about art and researching lesser known female artists and community support for local female artists. I haven’t tackled this one yet…. But I still got a week and a half!

Cheers!

The Shadow voice

In honor of National Womens History Month here is one of my favorite poems by one of my favorite authors Margaret Atwood. In addition to celebrating NWHM I also dedicated this month to poetry. So this blog gets me two bangs for my buck. Enjoy!

My shadow said to me:
what is the matter
Isn’t the moon warm
enough for you
why do you need
the blanket of another body

Whose kiss is moss

Around the picnic tables
The bright pink hands held sandwiches
crumbled by distance. Flies crawl
over the sweet instant

You know what is in these blankets

The trees outside are bending with
children shooting guns. Leave
them alone. They are playing
games of their own.

I give water, I give clean crusts

Aren’t there enough words
flowing in your veins
to keep you going.

National Womens History Month

I restarted my new year on February 24th. I sat down with a friend of mine and we decided to celebrate off holidays and use this year to learn and grow with monthly themes and celebrations. March is National Womens History Month. I started doing my research and was surprised to find out that every year the President has to make a “Presidentail Proclamation on Women’s History Month” .

The 2007 Women’s History Month theme is Generations of Women Moving History Forward.

So what am I going to do to celebrate NWHM? I plan on buying books by some of my favorite childhood female authors and donating them to my sons school.  I also want to read at least one biography about a woman who fought for our right to vote and/or equallity and then doante the biography to Igby’s school as well. I also want to learn about less famous women who have made an impact on my world as it is today such as Margaret Sanger. She fought for womens reproductive rights. I also want to learn about lesser known female artists too. I also want show more support in my community for local female artists. (I know the last one will involve actually leaving my house… rasberry)

I have a few other ideas brewing.... lets see what the month will bring.

Drawing Class

I am loving my drawing class. It is so nice to “get away” from life for three hours and completely endulge myself in something I have a passion for. The environment is awesome. I love my professor. I’m making friends. All around it has been an excellent experience.

The lesson for week two was negative space. I’m not going to post it. It wont make much sense. There was a folding chair involved in the still life and once I realized the angles and lines were were related i went to town with the base of the chair.

Week three I missed.

Week four was texture. We were instructed to draw the texture not the baskets in the still life. I used charcoal for the first time.

Week five we did ellipses. I had some irregular shaped bowls on my side of the still life. It was a great class though.

I think we are doing perspective this week. I am excited about it. I can’t wait for the lesson.

Any how…

Life is good, on with creation.

The Purge

I’m having a bit of a dry spell. I haven’t been producing much and what I have produced I don’t really care for. I have a room in my house where I matt my pictures. Yesterday I had 17 pictures ready to matt. Some of them were over 6 months old with no interest for sale. I decided it was time to purge the room.

In an attempt to clear my mind and create new vision I tossed all but a handful of pastel pics. I rearranged the room and moved all my 6 feet paintings into the matt room and turned those backwards so i was looking at the back side.

I know I need new material… my tax return is on the horizon and I have budgeted for a healthy supply of pastels and paint.

Lets see what comes of it all.

Life is good. On with creation!

New Addition to the Family

I am the proud new owner of an easel. I have been wanting to buy one for a few months now. When I started my drawing class a few weeks ago, I worked on one for the first time ever.  I do my pastel work on a table and I paint very large… so I just set those on the floor or a table. But in my drawing class… I was like holy fricken cow… an easel.... how cool are these. So.. yea.. I bought one today.....Her name is Gwen.

I promise to sing to Gwen and cover her in paint and texture and tell her my deepest darkest secrets.

As Always...... LIFE IS GOOD… ON WITH CREATION

Mastering The Cube

I started a drawing class last night. I was a bit anxious about it. You know, new place, new people… but I talked myself through it and walked right in. With my sparkly new sketch pad, pencils and kneaded eraser in hand I found an easel.

My professor is totally cool. As soon as he started talking I felt at ease.

Our first assignment was to draw the still life without looking at the paper. Then we drew it looking. It took me an hour and a half to draw what I did. What I drew was only a small portion of the still life. Some of the people drew the whole thing. Most drew a good portion of it. Most covered the 18 X 24 space they were working on. Some of the students walked around and commented on the work. When they got to me… they smiled and moved on without a word. HA!
I had to laugh.. I know I can’t draw. Ummm thats why I’m taking the class. I can’t say I wasn’t intimidated...but well.

I came home feeling good. This class isn’t about a grade. It isn’t about a degree or GPA. It is about me enjoying myself and learning about art. I want to learn about perspective and shading and composition. I want to challenge myself. I want to grow. That is why I took the class.

So, if the only thing I walk away with is the ability to draw a perfect cube… then so be it. It is something I couldn’t do before.

Here is what I drew.

As you can see I still have a long way to go. I’m looking forward to the journey.

Life is good...oooooo it is.... on with creation.

Arts in the Public School System

I’m about to ramble… but its a subject I have much feeling for....

My beef is about arts in the school system.  I have heard about cuts in the public school system in the arts for many years now. Igby came home today and was telling me about how they don’t have enough instruments in music class (they meet once a week) so most of the time they play games. He goes to “art class” once a week. I personally have been to the art room and this women is making things happen with scraps of art supplies. He “journals” in class, but to the best of my knowledge it doesn’t get any constructive criticism. Everything seems to be geared toward the big test. The test that will make the state of Texas money for the school system.

How much of that money actually hits the kids?  Ok, wait… im getting off the subject.

I grew up in an art saturated community. I was afforded instruments to try and art rooms filled with all types of media and actual creative writing teachers who fostered self expression.

My son and your kid(s), if you have any, are probably not as privileged. I know my son will not see those days. He will not be encouraged to be as creative as possible. He will be encouraged to create under a budget.

I don’t think people understand what we are doing to our society. To not cultivate the right side of the brain will have big effects on us.  We won’t see it tomorrow, but these kids we are raising and teaching.... they will make the decisions of tomorrow.  Cultivating the right side of the brain is essential to progress. Free thought and self expression give way to new ideas and the radical thoughts that are essential for grow and advancement.

It saddens me to think that the arts have been lost in the school system. I am an artist. My son has been brought up in this environment. He has sleep overs two or three times a month. Its usually two or three friends at a time. They do thier thing while I paint or chalk, and sure enough at least one of them askes me if he can paint. It always makes me happy. I set them up and tell them the only rule is “There is no rule in art.” They usually like that and forget what its supposed to look like.

We have heros, though, in the fight. Underpaid teachers like Alejandra Gomez and the work she does with the kids. There is an art teacher in every city and each and everyone of them have my upmost respect for what they do.

So yea, the lack of the arts in the school system. We will feel it eventually. I have no doubt.... no doubt at all. I don’t think people understand how big the impact will be.
