Seminole Canyon
Instead of shopping on the day after Thanksgiving I took a road trip to look at paintings done by Native Americans, some dating back 4,000 years. Seminole Canyon is about a 4 hour drive from here. My mom, cousin Mercy, Igby, and I headed out about 5 AM. It was good to get away, made me realize how much I miss Colorado. We did a guided tour and then a 4 mile hike. The clean air and beauty of the canyon were exactly what I needed. I came home and belted out two chalk pictures. The first two I’ve done in almost a month and a half. I have some photos posted on my photo blog.
Hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

Altares Y Ofrendas
I was in an art show for Dia de Los Muertos. It was at Centro Cultural Aztlan. The opening was Thursday November 2nd. The gallery was full of people and many many beautiful pieces of artwork. It was an honor for me to show along side so many amazing artists.
The opening was awesome. There was a performance group called Carnaval de San Anto. About half of the group were all using percussion instruments and the other half were dancers. They all had on Dia de Los Muertos masks and costumes. They looked breath taking. It started out like a death march and the performers made a circle around the gallery. Then the percussionist found a spot to park and the dancers started dancing around the gallery. Eventually they started pulling people in from the crowd to dance with them. I joined in and shook my booty to the drumbeats. It was soooo much fun. I had never experienced a performance like that. It left me awe struck.
Equally amazing was the love and support I got from friends and family. My mom and cousin Mercy were there. Freddy Lopez from Lopez Studios , Mike from Screaming Samurai Studio, Luli and Maria, Teri and her family, Merisa and Wendy. It was such a big night for me and having friends and family join me was just icing on the cake.
Freddy was also in the show. He had a beautiful painting. He is an amazing artist. His talent never ceases to amaze me. He has been an inspiration to me since I met him. In fact this whole thing came about because he and I stumbled upon some painted skulls at a flea market and I decided I wanted to paint some skulls myself. Then it grew and grew and before I knew it I was making an alter for my dad who passed two years ago. I am so happy he was showing. I can only imagine he will be showing more and more in the future. He is my muse. His thoughts and words drive me to create.
Luli and I danced with the dead, we danced with the dead. I met myspace friends I hadn’t met before. Denise was the hostess with the mostess. I had a blast. I left the space feeling like a new woman. I accomplished. I made. I did.
I have photos posted on my photo blog.
Life is good. On with creation.

Freddy Fender
It’s funny how time works. My dad loved Freddy Fender. I am curently building an alter for my dad for Dia de Los Muertos. Freddy Fender was buried today. On the way to work this morning I heard some of his music on the radio. I was instantly taken back to a moment in time that I had forgotten, long forgotten. The song “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” (i think thats the name) came on. I was exiting the freeway on my way work… and for a moment, I was 6 again, standing on his feet as we danced to one of his favorite songs. I could smell him and hear him singing along to the music. I could feel his big hands holding mine and feel the rough fabric of what he was wearing against my face. I remeber a blue 8 track tape with Freddy Fenders face on it. It was so long ago, but today it was only a moment ago.
I’m excited about the alter.
Life is good.
